Auto Insurance Claims: auto theft, claims advice, claim help

Question
I had a truck stolen from a truck stop in Jefferson OH and it was recovered in Nashville TN. I live in MI the insurance company said i have to pay to get the truck out of impound $500 and get it hauled back to MI $1600 is there anything i can do about this.

Answer
 Hello John,

It depends on the terms of your policy.  See what kind of towing coverage you have.  As a general rule, your policy should pay for towing when the vehicle has been stolen.  If your policy provides this coverage, contact your adjuster.  Look under the comprehensive section of the policy.

It is possible that your policy might cover towing, but only as a reimbursement.  In that case, you would need to present the receipt to the insurance company for payment.

As to the $500 for impound, again that depends on the terms of your policy.  It is possible that those charges are not covered. If it is in a tow lot, you will want to get it out of there as soon as possible because those charges accrue on a daily basis.

By all means, check the terms of your policy and then contact the adjuster.  If you cannot get the truck out of the tow lot right away, insurance companies have arrangements with larger and cheaper salvage lots where your vehicle can be stored at a much lower price.  If the insurance company is on the hook for the charges, they'll have it removed right away!

One other note.  If the insurance company is going to appraise the vehicle in TN, make certain that they do not delay that appraisal at your expense.

Hope this helps.
