Auto Insurance Claims: auto theft and insurance, theft investigation, cupholder

Question
key was left in cupholder,  i live in nj,  have comp coverage, am i covered ?

Answer
Hi Mick,

Each insurance company may have different ways they handle this situation. You would have to read the exclusions section of your policy to be sure. Some companies will exclude coverage if you leave the keys in the ignition or leave the car running. You should simply file the claim, tell the truth and see what happens. The insurance company will conduct a detailed investigation. They will look into your background as well as your finances. This is a normal part of a theft investigation. They always suspect the vehicle owner of being involved. The investigation process may take as long as 60 days before they will decide to cover or deny your claim.

I hope this helps
