Auto Insurance Claims: Insurance Will Not Pay Medical Claim, personal injury protection coverage, medical payments coverage

Question
I am insured in KY and had a single vehicle motorcycle accident on 10-5-09.  My insurance company has paid for the damage to the motorcycle but will not pay any of my medical claims.  They said it was because of the PIP coverage. Why won't they pay the medical bills and lost wages?

Answer
Hi Steve,

In most states that have PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage, it is not available on motorcycles. Many companies do not offer any kind of medical payments coverage on motorcycles because of the high risk of serious injury and the high cost associated with those injuries.

It sounds like the claims adjuster did not provide you with a full explanation of your coverage (or lack there of). You should pull out a copy of your policy and read the coverage that you purchased. If you still feel that there should be coverage for your injuries you should call the adjuster and ask them to provide you with a better explanation of why your injuries are not covered. Don't be afraid to ask as many questions as needed until you feel you have received a full explanation.

I hope this helps
