Auto Insurance Claims: lawsuite, property coverage, two cars

Question
I was recently involved in a car accident which was my fault. My property coverage from my insurance policy did not cover the full amounts for the two cars in question. I am now being sued by the insurance companies. If I cannot afford to pay these amounts, will they garnish my wages, place me in jail?

Answer
Melissa,

Apparently your limit of liability on your coverage was insufficient to cover the damage you caused. Don't worry about jail, as there are no more debtors prisons and you can set up a payment plan with anyone for as little as $5 per week. Your insurance may be able to pay for a lawyer to defend you, despite the property damage limits on your policy. Check with your insurance company for more information on their paying for an attorney to represent you.
