Auto Insurance Claims: Auto Insurance coverage for new engine, Auto Insurance coverage for new engine

Question
My wife was on a long road trip recently in my 2000 Mercedes.  The engine overheated, and so much damage was done the engine now needs to be replaced.  Apparently, the thermostat was defective and failed to properly register the heat that arose from some fan clutch problem.  I do not blame her, as she had no real warning.  Still, the engine was damaged beyond the point of repair.

Will my auto insurance cover this?

Answer
Hello Jay,

I am sorry to hear about your problem. This is a warranty problem and not an insurance issue. Most (99.9%) of insurance policies exclude mechanical breakdown from coverage. They cover accidents and not damages by defective components. You can file a claim and see where it goes, but most likely there is not coverage for your situation.

Good Luck
