Auto Insurance Claims: Stolen car claim, special investigative unit, local bar association

Question
My car was stolen, and after I filed a claim my case was transffered to An investigator. The guy ask me many questions and Afterwards he requested my phone records, banking statements, and my work schedule. I have a feeling he doesn't believe my story because he now sent my file to an lawyer and they want me to give my statement under oath and provide more documents.  Is this normal insurance procedure or are they trying to build a case against me? Should I hire a lawyer before I do anything else?

Answer
The investigator works in their SIU, or Special Investigative Unit.  This means they suspect that you committed insurance fraud.  It does not mean they have decided this, but they strongly suspect it.

When they get to the point of doing a statement under oath, this means they think they have a lot of evidence against you.  I would suggest getting a lawyer at this point.

PS -- very few attorneys specialize in insurance fraud, so you will probably not be able to find one who does.  However, if you find a quality local attorney who handles both personal injury claims and criminal claw, they should be qualified for your case.  Check with the local bar association for referrals.
