Auto Insurance Claims: is small claim worth it?, state insurance laws, moving violation

Question
I have a truck that has minor damage from a garage door to the front bumper.  I've received two quotes in the $700 to $800 range.  My deductible is $250.
What are the implications of filing this claim?  I haven't had a claim in 15 years.

Answer
Hi Brian,
Depending on the insurance company rules and/or the state insurance
law, it all depends on your state of residence.

In some states, since an accident without injury only counts as one point, it would have no impact on your rate (but if you had a second point in the next three years, either a moving violation or accident
there would probably be a large increase).  In other states, you might lose your good driver discount which varies between 10-15%.

If you lived in California where state insurance laws control the rating factors, there would be an increase of about $150 per year for
the first 3 years and then drop down to a smaller amount each year for the following 4 years.

Since you are only looking at collecting $450-$550 from the insurance company, my advise would be to pay the full amount out of pocket and save the insurance for something large.

I hope that you find this information helpful.  Your feedback by rating my response will be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Bennie
