Auto Insurance Claims: Totalled car, truth and hope, friend drive

Question
I insured a vehicle that is still in my sons name. He is not in my household. But he borrowed the car, then let his friend drive, 31 yrs old, and then the friend lost control, hydroplaned and totalled the vehicle! I need to know if they can deny cov3erage for the toal once they find out it's not titled in my name.

Answer
Hi Rebecca,

This is a difficult question to answer. It will depend on your states laws and the wording in your policy.

However, in general, this should be covered. Your son will have to prove that he does not live in your household. You will just have to report the incident, tell the truth and hope for the best. Keep in mind that if the claim is covered, the insurance company will likely issue the check in your sons name since he is the titled owner of the car.

I hope this helps
