Auto Insurance Claims: not at fault accident with no insurance, do I have to have insurance to rent a car

Question
I was in a not at fault accident and the cops were called. The cop told me i had a lapse in my ins but that it was fron awhile ago but i havent had ins for awhile now. I took my car to the other drivers ins body shop n it was deemed totaled. I am suppost to pick up a rental car from them tomorrow and i was told to bring my ins info. What should i do?

Answer
Lauren,

If you don't have liability insurance, you may not be able to get a rental car.  It is possible that you could purchase a rider at the rental car company, but that is not common.  My suggestion would be to go to an insurance agent or go online and get some liability insurance.  It is going to be hard or expensive to get a rental if you can't prove you have liability insurance.
