Auto Insurance Claims: Hit and run in Oregon, property damage coverage, paint scratches

Question
Hi-
I live in Eugene, Oregon, and a few weeks ago I was hit by another car who sped off.  The damage to my car was minor (scraped off paint, scratches), and I wasn't hurt but I reported it to police as well as my insurance company.  I was under the assumption that I had uninsured motorist property damage coverage, but it turns out I do not.  After getting an estimate, I was told it would cost $800 and I would have to pay a $500 deductible.  I certainly don't think it's worth paying that much, so I don't really want to bother getting it fixed.  Do I still have the option to not get it repaired despite the fact I already filed a claim with my insurance company?  Also, will my rates go up regardless of whether or not I actually get it fixed?  I have progressive insurance.  Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Answer
Hi Kristen,

In many cases even if your insurance company does not pay anything, the mear fact that you reported the accident could increase your rates. Since you have no uninsured motorist property damage coverage, this can only be paid as a collision claim. You would have to discuss with the insurance company how this may affect your rates.

You are not required to have the damage repaired. However, if you have a lienholder on your policy and the insurance company issues a check for the $300.00, it will be made payable to you and the lienholder. If you do not have a lienholder then you can accept the check with no obligation to repair the vehicle.

I hope this helps
