Auto Insurance Claims: Borrowed Car Accident, vehicle owner, nussbaum

Question
I have borrowed a car from a family member and the vehicle was uninsured. I was involved in an accident, which was my fault. I paid for the ticket and for the car to be taken out of the impound. Who is responsible for the damages, myself or the owner of the vehicle?

Answer
Jessica,

You are responsible for the damage to the car you were driving. You are also responsible for the damage to the other car or property involved in the accident. However, the owner of the car you were driving could be held responsible for the damage to the other car or property also, depending on the laws of your state. Some states hold both the vehicle owner and operator responsible for damage to other persons cars or property.
