Auto Insurance Claims: hit parked car, first offense, speeding tickets

Question
i hit a parked van while making a right hand turn. no one was in the van. there are no injuries involved only damage to the vehicles. i did however get arrested for dwi. it is my first offense. im 25 and have only had 2 speeding tickets in my life. i reported the accident to my insurance agent the morning of my release from jail. i did not let them know i was arrested for dwi. i didn't think to do so until i went to pick up a rental car and couldn't get it because i do not have my license, only a temporary permit to drive for the next month. i have already turned my car in for repairs. is the fact that a dwi was involved going to affect whether or not the damages to the vehicles will be covered? i am most concerned about the person i hit. but if my car wouldn't be covered i would like to get it out of the shop until i am able to save up the money for repairs.

Answer
Hi Amber,

This will depend on the actual wording of your insurance policy. Some policies have a specific exclusion that removes any coverage if the damage is caused while intoxicated. Some policies only have the exclusion for your own vehicle but will pay for the other persons damage. Other policies do not have the exclusion at all. The only way to know for sure is to either read your policy or call your insurance company and inform them of the DUI and see if they tell you there is an exclusion.

I hope this helps
