Auto Insurance Claims: Wiring in Steering wheel fire, insurance adjuster, turn signals

Question
I was wondering if the wiring contained in my steering wheel that burnt, and in turn caused my turn signals, heater blower and Brakes to quit working, is covered under comprehensive coverage? My insurance lady said that it is considered maintenance.

Answer
Hi Caroline,

It will have to be determined the exact cause of the fire. The part that initially caused the fire is not covered. However, anything that was damaged by the fire is covered.

You should inform the insurance adjuster of this then get the vehicle to a shop that can diagnose what caused the fire and what else was damaged. You should have the insurance adjuster send a damage appraiser to the shop to go over the car with the shop and determine what will be paid for.

I hope this helps
