Auto Insurance Claims: Accident in parking lot -- other driver drove off, auto liability insurance, visible damage

Question
I was backing out of a space in a private parking lot.  I was parked between an SUV and a pickup truck, and could not see very well .. so I was moving extremely slowly.  I kept looking, checking mirrors, etc. when all of a sudden I felt a thump.  I had backed into a car that was moving up the row.  It had been right in a blind spot, where I could not see him.

I immediately got out my auto liability insurance information, got out of my car to see if the other driver was OK.  I had hit his car just behind the driver's side rear wheel, no visible damage, but I tried to do the right thing and offer my information so he could have his car checked and fixed if there turned out to be damage.  He was very hostile and confrontational, when I offered my information, he said "You backed into me, lady, what are you doing?"  He would not accept my information, asked if there was damage to his car.  When I replied "not that I can see," he drove off.  I don't know if this is relevant but he didn't speak English very well.  There were two witnesses to the accident, they both said he had just pulled out of a parking spot and it looked like he was trying to get around me before I backed all the way out.

Since he refused my information, and drove off, should I be concerned at all?  Should I report the incident to my insurance company?  There is a scratch on my rear bumper, on the passenger side where the impact happened.  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Ann,

I would not be worried. The damage if any is minimal to both cars. You did not provide him with any information so he can not contact you or your insurance company. You should not report this to your insurance company because they will mark it as an at-fault accident and raise your rates even if they do not pay out any money.

You should just forget about it. You will likely never hear of it again.

I hope this helps
