Answer
Varma,

Sorry to hear of your accident and I hope no-one was hurt. A similar situation happened to once.

Based upon your account, I am under the understanding that vehicle #3 struck vehicle #2 before you struck veh.#3. With that said;

Because you struck the car ahead of you suggests that you were negligent in not maintaining a safe and proper distance and/or traveling too fast, or failed to maintain control of your vehicle etc. and therefore will likely be considered at fault for the damages of the vehicle (#3) ahead of you and the damages sustained to your friend's car. Thus you (or your friend's insurance) will be responsible for the damages to rear of the vehicle you hit and for the damages sustained to the front of the vehicle you were driving.

So...to answer your question...I'm sorry to say that it is unlikely the vehicle ahead of you has any liability to you and that you will be found liable for the damages sustained to the rear of the vehicle ahead of you (not their front-end if they hit the car ahead of them before you struck them) and and your own...thus your friend's insurance will likely provide indemnification for same.

Drive carefully and defensively by allowing just a bit more room to be able to avoid such situations.

Thank you for your question and I wish you, (and your friend) the best!
