Auto Insurance Claims: Liability insurance, auto insurance policies, insurance carrier

Question
Last month I was hit by a car while riding my motorcycle in Washington state. Insurance is not required on motorcycles in Washington, and although I carry it on one of my bikes, I did not have it on this one. The person who hit me is from California, and carries only the Calif minimum of 15/30/5. Washington has a minimum of 25/50/10. Is there a law in place where by the Calif insurance carrier has to meet the Washington minimums? And if not, what is the best way (in your opinion) to go about getting the most out of this situation. My bills are already past the Calif minimum, and I've been out of work for a month. I am self employed, and the lack of work is very bad for me and my shop. The driver that hit me is a "kid" at 27 years old, and has no assets as far as I can tell. I have an attorney working on this, but I still want some answers for myself. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, James

Answer
Hi James,

Yes. To the best of my knowledge all auto insurance policies automatically adjust coverage to meet the minimum requirements of the state you happen to be in. Of course, it would be upto your attorney to obtain a copy of the at-fault drivers policy to verify that this is the case. However, I'm fairly certain that this is universally the case.

I hope this helps
