Auto Insurance Claims: auto damage estimator requirements, insurance company claims, penpro

Question
QUESTION: I have been a body tech and have own my own shop for over 25 yrs. I would like to become an independent auto damage estimator in the State of Florida. Could you tell me where to start? I am ASE & GM certified.

ANSWER: Hi Eddie,

There are 2 ways you can go. If you want to start your own business, you will first have to create a name for your business, obtain a business license, get a phone number, purchase a computer, purchase a fax machine, lease a computerized estimating system such as CCC or Mitchell or PenPro and then start calling insurance company claims managers and selling your services.

Another option would be to contact the larger independent appraisal companies such as Property Damage Appraisers (PDA) and going to work for them.

I hope this helps

Thanks for the help Richard!

Answer
Hi Eddie,

In Florida, there is no licensing requirement to be an auto damage appraiser. The only licence that you will need is a business license. It would be best for you to incorporate as an S corporation or an LLC. Most independent appraisal companies will hire you on an independent contractor basis. If you incorporate, you can have them pay your corporation then you can pay yourself and take advantage of many tax benefits as well as limiting your liability.

Good Luck
