Auto Insurance Claims: Liability Question, proper time frame, liability questions

Question
Hi!  Over four years ago I resided in Ohio and a friend borrowed my car and drove it to Florida.  He got in a accident in Florida(his fault) and my insurance covered him.  Today, I received a summons that one of the people he hit is suing him, myself and my mother for $15,000 for bodily damages.  Am I liable according to Florida law? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Dawn,
It is important that you make copies of this summons for your own record and immediately get the original summons to your insurance company (by hand delivery if possible).
It is normal that everyone connected with the car be named in a lawsuit.  Names can always be deleted, but no new ones can be added after the suit is filed.
Your own insurance company is better equipped to answer the liability questions, tell you if the lawsuit was filed within the proper time frame and explain your limits of coverage.
I hope this information has been of help.
