Auto Insurance Claims: My Parked Car Totalled, rental car reimbursement, city dump

Question
Ok well this monday February 1st 2008 i went too work parked my car where i do every day during the course of the day a Tractor Trailer tow truck was towing a rather large city dump truck. when it rounded the corner my car was parked on it became apparent that the tower did not hook up the dump truck properly and it swung out striking my car and completely totaling it. My car wasn't the nicest car worth about 1,000$ but it was worth more then that too me it was my mode of transportation too and from work and if i get a flat out 1,000$ it will definitely not be able too replace my car after figuring in insurance/registration/inspection of the new car if needed i really just don't want too be in the end ending up with a totaled car and a check that wont get me what i once had i was just wondering what am i entitled too be able too claim from his insurance company dollar wise what am i able too ask for

Answer
Hi Brian-

I'm sorry to hear about your car.  I'm glad you weren't in it at the time!

Unfortunately the drivers insurance company is going to give you what the car would cost from a private sale in the open market.  You can ask for rental car reimbursement within reason, and they will work with you on options your car may have had that are not stock, but you're not going to get anything more than that.
