Auto Insurance Claims: Not my fault and Im having to pay, rental car insurance, rental insurance

Question
I was in an accident a week ago and 100% not my fault I was stopped at a stop sign and he hit the side of my truck with his rear end. The problem is its a 1991 Toyota extra cab which I paid $3200 for a couple of months ago.  They have totaled it and are offering me $2200 and are saying I have to turn in the rental car in 3 days from this offer. And that I have to pay the $14 a day for the rental insurance.  I am a college student and have no money and at this point I am having to pay the insurance on the rental car and will not be able to replace my vehicle for that amount of money.  I don't know what to do. I have not accepted the offer at this point.  Please help me

Answer
Hi Susan,

The value of your truck is negotiable. You need to research the value by going to www.autotrader.com . There you can search for vehicles like yours that are currently for sale. You should also have the insurance company send you a copy of what ever they used to determine the value of your truck so you can review it for errors.

Once you have researched the value you should print out all of the information and send it to the insurance company with a counter offer to settle your claim. There will still be some back and forth until you reach an agreeable figure.

The insurance company is not responsible for paying for the rental car insurance. You may want to check with your insurance company to see if it covered on your policy. If so, you can drop the coverage.

I hope this helps
