Auto Insurance Claims: How long can I keep opening my claim?, fact concern, insurance record

Question
I was rear ended when I stopped for a red light on 12/20/2007. Both had no injury and no time, so we just exchanged some information without calling the police. She was driving her sibling's car. I filed a claim with my insurance company on 01/05/08 while I was waiting for her reply regarding how she will pay for $800 as the repair cost.
Now, her (her brother's in fact) concern is a report to DMV and ask me to cancel my claim in order to adjust the official estimation from $800 to below $750; she'll directly pay me the $800.
As long as my car gets fixed, it's ok for me, but I understand it's risky. So, I want my claim open until I receive the money.

In such a case, how long can insurance company hold my claim? Are there any possibilities that my insurance record gets negative effects by my late decision? I'll appreciate if you would give me your advice. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Mia-

I'm pretty sure it's too late.  Once a claim is started, they will send an adjuster out and he will determine the amount of damage.
I would look out for yourself here and not try to help them beat the system.  The system is there for a reason and it's in your best interest to follow it.
what she is trying to do borders on insurance fraud and could result in prosecution.

I hope that helps
