Auto Insurance Claims: Do I have to send my car to the body shop to collect my claim?, safe auto, department of insurance

I was rear ended a few days ago in Indiana, and I was told that I may have to go through a body shop to collect my claim.  I was hoping to settle for an amout and have safe auto send me a check.  What is the law regarding this in Indiana?

Hi Craig-

I am only licensed in Ca, so I only know how things work here.  My experience is that you can take it anywhere you want or not have it repaired if you want but they will only pay what they agree it would cost.

If they will not tell you why they do it that way or won't cooperate then I suggest you search the Department of Insurance in your State and call them with your question.
