Auto Insurance Claims: vehicle fire, penalty of perjury, vehicle fire

Question
I recently had a small engine compartment fire. The wiring is burnt completely. This happened in daylight with lots of witnisses at a small market.now my insurance company is sending me an affidavit and they taped my husband in a phone conversation asking about our financial situation, debt, etc.I was just wondering is this typical and what exactly is in an affidavit?

Answer
Hi Melissa-

I have heard of this happening before.  This is your insurnace company trying to fight fraud and I applaud them for it because it keeps all of our rates down.  There are those out there who will get behind on their payments so they will start a car fire or have a friend steal their car so they can collect on the insurance.  If you are not involved in that type of fraudelent activities I don't think you have anything to worry about.  An affidavit is a sworn statement of the truth under penalty of perjury.

Let me know if I can be of more help
