Auto Insurance Claims: Insurance for a Disabled Non-Driver, fault accidents, martial status

Question
My father is disabled and no longer drives, or has a valid license. He owns a car and wants to know if he can insure his vehicle as a non-driver adding myself and a neighbor as the primary drivers to get him around on his daily activities. This would be in New York State.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Thomas,
Yes, your father should be able to purchase an insurance policy from almost any company licensed to do business in the state of New York.
The rate would be based on your and the neighbors driving records.
This will include many factors, which could include years of driving experience, traffic violations and/or fault accidents in the past three years and if either of you are under age 30, they might consider your martial status.
You may have to call several companies to get a quote, simply because there are so many agents that have not been properly trained for handling 'unusual situations'.
I was active in the business for 34 years and only averaged about one request every two years for situations like your fathers.
I hope this has been of help.  Please write again if I can provide more assistance.
Your feedback by rating my answer will be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Bennie
