Auto Insurance Claims: maxium liability, umbrella policy, damaged cars

Question
I am being sued for a large sum and I wonder if the complaint's insurience co. has somehow found out about the
umbrella policy that I have. I was told that in Maryland the amount that someone is insured is not disclosed. Does
the complaint's insurance know? Will my insurer fight for
a reasonable pay out?

Answer
Hi Dan,
If you were at fault in an accident and other person(s) were injured, there becomes a point in settling the injuries where the injured person(s), or their attorney, have a legal right to demand that your insurance company(s) disclose your limits of liability coverage.
If they had their own company repair their car, that company is only interested in the fact that you have adequate coverage to repair all damaged cars, which is only disclosed if you don't have enough coverage.  The adverse company has no legal interest in the injured claimants case and no desire to request disclosure of your limits of bodily injury.
The disclosing your limits of coverage will have no affect on your company's legal responsibility to defend your case and only be willing to settle for a 'fair' amount.
They will fight any excessive demand through a jury trial if necessary to assure that the injured parties only receive a fair and equitable settlement based on the extent of their injuries.
