Auto Insurance Claims: Driver coverage, honda crv, brother lives

Question
I am the executor of my mother's estate which includes a 99 Honda CRV. USAA is the insurer. USAA has informed me that I am the only person insured to drive the vehicle. My brother is currently driving the car from time to time. He intends to purchase it from the estate in a few months. I told him what USAA said and he said not to worry his insurance would cover him on any vehicle he was driving. My question: IS THIS INDUSTRY PRACTICE? I was under the assumption that the vehicle itself was insured, not the driver. IS MY BROTHER COVERED WHEN HE DRIVES THE CAR?
Thank you

Answer
Hi Linda,

You are correct. Auto insurance follows the car not the driver. So your brothers insurance will not cover him in the Honda.

The exception though would be if your brother lives at a different address than is listed as the "home" of the Honda, your brother may be covered since you can loan your car to anyone outside your residence and they will be covered.

I hope this helps
