Auto Insurance Claims: Hit and Run stolen car, crime victims fund, collision coverage

Question
Hi, I'm writing you from the state of Connecticut. On Monday Night my park car was hit by a another car. No one was in my car. The driver of the hit and run car and the passenger fled the scene. I called my insurance company the same night and the police. My insurance policy is only for liability. I was wondering if the other insurance company of other the vehicle will pay for the damage of my car, even though they claim that it was a hit and run. And not only that my insurance company will not cover me for a hit and run. I was wondering if there is any step I can take to insure that the other insurance company of the other car will pay for the damage of my car. Even though they claim it to be stolen. I would really appreciate your advice Thank you

Answer
Hi Rina,

If the car that hit your car was stolen the owner of the vehicle is not responsible for the damage to your car. Since you do not have collision coverage on your policy your insurance will not pay for the damage.

You should get a copy of the police report. Ask the police when the car was reported stolen. If the car was actually stolen then there is nothing you can do to make the other insurance company pay for your damage. They only pay when their insured is responsible for the damage and since the car was stolen he is not. You may want to call your State Attorney's office to see if your state has a crime victims fund that you can collect from.

I hope this helps
