Auto Insurance Claims: auto insurance, finance papers, driving without insurance

Question
Hello,
My daughter is 18 and just got her drivers license.  She is looking to buy a car.  She lives at home and I want to know what is my legal obligation if she buys a car and does not have insurance and gets in an accident.

Answer
Hi Lynn,

If she is 18 she is legally an adult. As long as your name does not appear on the title, registration or any of the finance papers (if any) then you have no liability.

On the other hand, you are still the parent of a child living in your household that will be endangering the public by driving without insurance. You should take a way the keys and refuse to return them until she shows you proof of insurance as well as ongoing proof of insurance payments.  But that's just me.

I hope this helps
