Auto Insurance Claims: auto accident, my fault, presented ins. card, license tags, trouble with the law

Question
At time I assumed my ins. was good, according to my card it was  still good, but later found out my mother did not pay premium. The accident was my fault, however I presented to officer a Ins. card, I thought was valid, unfortunely later found that not to be true. Question: will I be penalized for that? How many estimates is she LEGALLY in the state of Ky have to give to me? Also, she took it upon herself to contact my Ins. Co. to report the accident to try and get me in trouble with the law. Last Question: I was at fault, however her license tags were expired. Am I still at fault and do I still have to be the one to pay for her auto repairs?

Your prompt replay would be very appreciated.

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

Even though her tags were expired, you are still at fault and will have to pay the cost of repairs. She is only required to get 1 estimate from the shop she intends to do the repairs. Although I don't think anything will come of it, it is possible that you could face a ticket for providing false information to a police officer. However, if you explain that you did not know the insurance was expired they will likely drop it.

I hope this helps
