Auto Insurance Claims: Vandalism/Theft, claims advice, claim help

Question
Good day,
Someone broke into my car.  They broke the driver's side glass, they took a computer bag with my laptop.  The insurance company will fix the glass, but say they cannot reimburse me for my lost items.   State Farm holds my policy and has just told me they won't cover my stolen items.  Is there any way I can get some reimbursement for the contents that have been stolen. I do have a police report.

Answer
 Hello Jesse,

Unfortunately for you, your insurance company is correct.  Auto insurance does not cover theft from your vehicle.

What does pay is homeowner's insurance and often, renter's insurance.  If you have either, you need to take a look at your policy documents too see what the deductible is.  If the deductible is lower than the value of the computer, you can file a claim. You are entitled to benefits minus the deductible.

If you are looking at homeowner's insurance, beware that there are two deductibles in Florida.  First is  essentially the "hurricane deductible" which is far higher than the deductible that applies to other types of claims - such as theft of your property.

Hope this helps.
