Auto Insurance Claims: totaled the car by insurance, salvage title, state inspector

Question
If they total my car , can I keep my car ?

Answer
Hi Patti,

Depending on the state you live in and the age of the car you may be able to keep your car but it can be very difficult.  The title would still have to be signed over to the insurance company. They would then apply for a salvage titled in their name. They would then sign the salvage title over to you.  You would then need to have the repairs done and present the car to a state inspector to certify the car as roadworthy. The inspection usually costs about $150.00. Then you could apply to have the vehicle retitled in your name but it will always have a "salvage" or "rebuilt" stamp on the title that will render the car only worth about half of standard value.

I hope this helps
