Auto Insurance Claims: left the scene, minor collision, leaving the scene of an accident

Question
hi, i was pulling out of a parking lot and traffic forced me to back up a little...the exit onto the road was sloped so when i looked back nothing was there...i barely backed up a foot and felt the thud...i hit a car, i dont know where she came from and she was definately moving forward coz i didnt have time to gather any speed....i waited a few seconds...then pulled out on the road and drove away because she didnt pull up behind me or gave any indication that she was getting down...i presumed since it was a very minor collision and was sure of no damage i left the scene ...basically because i was not able to pay my insurance premium and wanted to avoid any trouble... now i am worried as to what can happen... is there a way my insurance will cover this if something comes up in the future...i beleive she had enough time to get my license plate number... there could not be any witnesses. i am a foreign student and was unnecessarily worried about deportation as i didnt have insurance,, please help ..what can go wrong and can i correct this in any way

Answer
Hi Jigar,

In this country what you have done is a crime. Leaving the scene of an accident is a felony and can result in fines, and or jail time. Also your insurance company will not cover you if the policy was lapsed. It must be in force at the time of the accident.

I hope this helps
