Auto Insurance Claims: fraud investigations, special investigations unit, insurance investigators

Question
Hello, I am writing a fictional story in which a car falls off a bridge, but the driver is not found.  Would the insurance company typically be involved at some point even if the driver is not found?

And also, if it was expected that the driver staged it as an accident, do some insurance companies have a person or persons that would investigate or do they rely solely on police reports in these matters?

Answer
The involvement of the insurance company will depend on the applicable coverage.  If the vehicle had liability only, then the involvement would be limited to any bridge damage.  If the car or the driver have coverage, then there would be insurance company involvement.

Insurance investigators do rely on police investigations but all insurance companies also have a highly trained Special Investigations Unit the could become involved as well.  These units are generally comprised of ex-law enforcement folks who have contacts throughout the criminal justice system.

Good luck!, sounds like fun.  I'm actually writing a fiction book myself.
