Auto Insurance Claims: Progressive Auto Insurance (lack of coverage), state insurance commissioners, progressive auto insurance

Question
In Feb 2006, I switched to Progressive Auto Ins (did online and will never do that again). I had my current dec page and went line by line for the same coverage. We have 3 cars, 4 drivers and 2 cars have liens. My main question was - did my daughter need to be added as she was away at school. Yes, she did as she was not 100 miles away, ok no problem. So, I get my policy and pay monthly through EFT. I get my first set of cards. So, on 3/7/07, my daughter is driving from from school, traffic slowed down and she backended someone. The was not a scratch on the car she hit, our car had to be towed. So, I contact progressive and they tell me I have no coverage - as I do not have comp and collision! Supposedly, they send documents, that I needed to have photos taken of the car, within 5 days of taking the policy. Never have done this before. So they cancelled the comp/coll. I have called them repeatly for copies of this (finally received) don't remember ever getting it, as I would have taken care of this immediately. They said they called to verify all the coverage I wanted and have tapes. Still waiting for this. I don't know where to go from here. Please help. I have since cancelled and went with a real person (agent)

Answer
Hi Roberta,

I used to be a claims adjuster for Progressive. I can tell you that it has long been their requirement that all vehicles covered for comp. & collision do require being photographed.

If there is a dispute as to whether they informed you of this, the only thing you can do is to try to make them prove it. If you are not satisfied with the way they are handling it, you should file a complaint with your state insurance commissioners office. The will require Progressive to provide all proof that is required.

I hope this hellps
