Auto Insurance Claims: Auto accident settlement, therapy massage, bils

Question
Hello Mr. Hixenbaugh,

I was involved in a 2 car accident in which the driver of the other vehicle lost control, and entered my lane of traffic. There was about $3500 in auto repairs, and I developed issues with my back since the accident. I did not go to the hospital the day of the accident, but did receive treatment from my Dr. I have since received physical therapy, massage therapy, and chiropractic treatment. My medical bills have exceeded $20,000, and I am finally ready to try to settle my claim. I would like to stay away from getting a lawyer, and settle this claim myself. The problem is that I want to receive a fair settlement, and I am not sure what I can expect. Is the "3 to 5 times medical bills" statement correct? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Nick,

3 to 5 times the medical bils is a general rule of thumb. The amount could be higher or lower depending on the nature of the injuries, the type and necessity of the treatment received, your prior medical history and the prognosis.

There are too many variables for me to try to evaluate your particular circumstances.  Considering the amount of your medical bills, you may want to talk to an attorney.

I hope this helps
