Auto Insurance Claims: Property Damage to Rear Entertainment System, replacement car seats, home owners insurance

Question
My car was totaled in a rear end accident (not my fault).  I had 2 DVD changers in the trunk and 2 screens installed, in the headrest (the whole system was a hard wire installation).  I opened up a claim w/ my insurance and they say they won't cover this property as this was equipment that was installed after the car was purchased and I didn't buy any endorsement policies to cover this equipment since my insurance doesn't offer it.

My questions:
1.  Once I open a claim w/ my insurance, do I have the option of trying to settle with the at fault party's insurance instead?  Can I tell my insurance I don't want to process the property damage claim with them anymore?  However my insurance already sent me a check for the replacement car seats and stroller that were also damaged in the accident.
2.  Am I entitled to get paid for the rear entertainment system and the shirt that I was wearing that got damaged due to the airbag?  My insurance company says I should claim these items through my home insurance since these items aren't covered under collision coverage which I don't want to do.

Answer
Hi Sharon,

Yes, you can close the claim with your insurance company and pursue your damages with the atfault persons insurance company.

Yes, you are entitled to be paid for all of your damages from the at fault party. Including the DVD changer, the screens and your shirt.

Do not make a claim with your home owners insurance. That will likely cause them to drop you.

I hope this helps
