Auto Insurance Claims: Comprehensive Claim, collision repair shop, hail damage

Question
I recently filed an insurance claim for hail damage to my vehicle. I received the check for the damage and it is made out to me and the collision repair shop. Is this normal? I was under the impression that since this was not a collision claim but a comprehensive claim that the check would be made out solely to me. My vehicle is 2004 Ford F150. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Dear Brian,

The repair shop thinks it is a real good idea!  But in fact it makes no difference whether or not you have the truck repaired there or whether you decide to drive a dented truck and invest the money.

It is your loss that the company is supposed to be compensating you for, NOT some way to get their favorite shop some business.

Send the check back and instruct the adjuster to send it to you in your name only.
