Auto Insurance Claims: choosing insurance company, recent quote, coverage policy

Question
I am considering switching my auto policy based on a recent quote I received from Geico, which did indeed  quote me a rate that was about 15% less than my current rate.  One big difference, however, is that Geico only writes 6 month policies (because it is 'to my advantage' to have it reviewed more often).  My current policy is a yearly policy.

It occurs to me that perhaps the way Geico works is to quote a low (initial) rate and then renew it in  six months at a rate more in line (or even higher) than my current rate.

Can you give me any guidance on how to make a decision to switch companies?  Should it be based on cost alone?  Are there other factors?

By the way.   I am an extremely good risk.  No tickets, no claims....

Thanks very much for any advice you can give.

Answer
NEVER base any decision re Auto and/or HO insurance SOLELY on price.

A CHEAP costing policy will get you CHEAP or non-existant claims service when the need arises.

Are you presently insured through an agent?

Does GEICO's policy run through an agent or directly with GEICO?  If the latter, be aware that an agent is your best friend when the need arises... without any agent to champion your cause when the need arises you may be SOL when dealing directly with whoever the company is.. on whatever the issue is.

GEICO's explanation for a 6-month policy term is essentially a "crock".  You appear to have seen it for what it is... any opportunity to review your polcy on a semi-annual basis and base along any increase(s) in rates and premium... in my opinion you are better off with a 12-month policy term.

When considering your choices you need to consider the following and in no particular order:

Price
Deductibles
Levels of coverage
Policy Term
Do you go through an agent (independent) or directly to the company when the need arises?
Where is the nearesr claim operation to your location?
What body shops in your area are on the carrier's "approved list"?
How does your State Ins Dept RATE the carrier(s) (number of complaints, etc)?

Be an informed consumer and do your "due diligence" before switching insurance companies...

Hope and trust that the above answers your quetion(s).

Feel free to get back to me with any additional questions/issues relative to this matter.
