Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 1997 ford ranger ac problem, compressor clutch, fan failure

Question
The clutch on the compressor engages then disengages
after just a few seconds

Answer
Hello Robert
That could be for a number of reasons
Too little gas or too much gas
Condenser fan failure, not cooling the condenser allows the pressure to build up to the maximum relying on the high pressure switch to control compressor activity.
Worn compressor clutch, the clutch operates on an electromagnet. This tires over time and isn't strong enough to engage the clutch for long enough
You may also have a cycling switch around the drier/accumulator
Disconnect the wires and short across them with a length of wire.
The compressor should engage permanently when you do this

Have a look at the above and eliminate everything else. If the compressor clutch is at fault I can help you further.

Thanks Paul
