Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: insufficient cooling, vw golf 1 cabriolet, golf 1 cabriolet

Question
QUESTION: i have the vw golf 1 cabriolet of 1988.i recently replaced the sd508 with the sd5h14 compressor, along with the receiver dryer and the txv.my car had already aluminium condenser from the previous owner.
the repair shop charged it with 900 grams of r134, after evacuating the system for only 15 minutes
the suction pressure was 1.7 bar
the ambient temperature 90F
the vent temp 45F on low speed
i don't feel cold air while i drive my car
is the 900 grams of r134 not enough now that i changed the compressor.
with the old sd508 and r12,
the refrigerant capacity was 1150 grams,
the suction presssure 2.5 bar and
the vent temp 39F for ambient temp of 90F
what should i do?

ANSWER: Hi Yiannis

The system will run better with R-12 then with R134.  I'm glad you still have R-12 in Greece.  In the US a 30lb tank costs about $835.00 US.  I think I understood you said that your system is working better with the R-12. When you put in the R-12 you got better cooling correct.  If so I would keep it like that.  If you need anything else let me know or if I misunderstood please let me know.

QUESTION: thank you for your reply!
i know that with the r12 cooling would be better, but the new compressor (sd5H14) is only r134 compatible.
the main question now is:
should  i charge it with r134 until the pressure gauges show 2.5 bar for suction and 18bar for discharge (for ambient temp 90F)even if  the charging will exceed the 1000 grams of r134
is  there any  risk to blow the compressor?

Answer
Fortunately the compressor can work with R-12 although the seals are for R-134.  You would have a bigger problem going from 12 to 134.  I would charge the system with R-12 your system is set for R-12 not R-134.  This condenser will dissipate heat slower then the condensers made for R-134.

The construction is different so I would go with the vehicle's info not the compressor.
