Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 2001 Chrysler Town & Country 3.3L : Cabin Blower Speed, recirculation air, dash unit

Question
QUESTION: Hello Candido,

I don't know if my problem is something you look into or not. First, I have the 3-zone automatic HVAC system. When starting the vehicle and first turning on the a/c after it has been sitting in the sun and the cabin is hot, the recirculation display shows on the dash unit like normal. The problem is the air coming from the vents constantly goes from blowing on high to low like it is "surging". This started about a month ago. The air is plenty cold like it should be. This "surging" keeps happening until the inside temperature cools down enough for the recirculation to automatically turn off or if I manually turn it off and then it will blow normal like it should. Thanks for your time and assistance.

ANSWER: HI Rennie

Try disconnecting your battery to reset your actuators.  This may work for you.  Let me know if it is still doing it after the reset.

QUESTION: Hi again Candido,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I disconnected the battery and still have the same problem as before.

ANSWER: I think I understand what you are saying.  It sounds like you have an automatic A/C control.  If you do when you put it on AUTO the system is control the blower speed and the reticulating air door.  This may be normal depending on you ambient temp.  You may be in an area where it is not quite as hot yet but not quite as cold as to not turn on the A/C system.  If this is the case then your system is working OK it is just to close for it to determine just what you need inside the vehicle.  If your system is not AUTO A/C then you may have a problem with your resistor.  Let me know if you have that auto button or not and I'll help.

QUESTION: Yes, I do have the automatic a/c system that controls everything including the recirculation air door. I understand what you are saying about the temperature not being hot or cold enough for the system to "make up its mind" and that makes perfect sense. The only thing about it is I live in Florida also (Haines City) and it is plenty hot right now, as you well know with being in south Florida, so I don't think that is an issue in my case. Also, the problem has never happened before in the 7 years I have owned the van until it started approximately a month ago. Thanks for your continued help.

Answer
If that is the case then, you must have the actuator for the reticulating; air door checked out, it may be going bad.  I have never seen it do that but these actuators have a range that it looks for and if it receives but do not acknowledge the position it can do that.
