Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: A/C compressor, dash switch, ford ranger

Question
I have a 1997 Ford Ranger. The compressor does not come on when the dash switch is placed in the a/c mode. I replaced the selector switch. This didn't cure the problem. The fan works fine. I dis-connected the plug under the hood at the compressor and jumped a hot wire to it, and it will come on and blow cold air. I have checked the fuses and relay and all are working properly. Is there another place I can look for an in-line fuse or something? I

Answer
Hi Dan

It sounds like you need to replace the switch you jumped.  That is called the cycling switch.  That controls the compressor and it does go bad.  You can pick one up at most parts houses and definitely at the dealer.  It's  not to expensive.  When you replace it make sure you replace the o-ring and be careful when you screw it back in.
