Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: condenser change out, heat strips, boredoms

Question
Hi David--Gregg Wright here.I have a question for you Sir.Last year I installed a straight cool ,split system in my home. It's a Goodman 3 Ton 13 SEER R-22 system with,of course, heat strips.{Matched system}Recently I acqured a Goodman,13SEER,R-22 heat pump.Only thing,it's a 2.5 Ton.Can I install this in place of the 3 Ton?If so,will it work as well, efficently, will it be worth the change out?I'm trying to get away from the electric heat only that I've got now. Thanks so much for your time.   Gregg By the way,I decided to go with the Yellow Jacket Manifold, thanks.

Answer
Gregg,
The 2.5 ton will work in the 3 ton's stead. However, I'm not going to say to do it. Simply because to definitively say it's a good idea and will work a bit more efficiently, a whole lot of factors come into play. Square footage of the house, # of bends in the ductworking, level of insulation, layout of the house, stories...... It goes on and on. This is one time you may need to call someone in to take  look at it. Preferably someone who has some installation/design experience.
But if you are looking at doing it just to do it, a case of the boredoms setting in or something, (happens to me frequently, the wife can't stand it) then absolutely it will work in place of the 3 ton. To say that it would be cost effective, I can't do that over this type of forum, because I dont have th einformation.
Will your electric bill be cheaper? More than likely. Rather than running all of those heat strips... the way a heat pump works is the exact same way your a/c works in the summer time. Only in reverse. So theoretically your electric bill would stay fairly level throughout the year dependent upon where in the world you are.

Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer than this here, but without a boatload more of information, I can't say whether or not it would benefit you.

Good luck with the manifold. I have no doubt they will last you a good while. Their products have always been pretty good to me. From the vaccuum pumps to gauges to portable recovery machines, they put their name on some good stuff.

Thanks for the question and again, sorry I can't say "Yes do it" or "that's a terrible idea." But I try not to lead people down a path without all of the information I can get. Have a great day and good luck in whichever route you choose.
