Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 2002 Honda Civic, fuse box, brain box

Question
I was driving my car with the AC on when suddenly air stopped coming out my vents. I checked it in all modes (ac, heater, vent) and it didn't work so i assume it has something to with my blower motor. Is it a common problem in these vehicles?

Answer
Andrew,
First question...
Does your Power door lock work? Do you have other lights on the dash coming on also? (Check engine, brake, SRS, etc?) If you do, I would automatically zoom into the multiplex control unit being the bad component. This piece controls and provides the grounds for several systems in your vehicle and provides a variable signal to the ECM (brain box).
If this is not the case, then it shouldn't be too awfully difficult to get up and going again.
Second question... IS your vehicle the hatchback? I ask this because the wiring for the hatchback varies a bit from the sedan, and I want to make certain you get the right information. What I am giving you now is from the sedan version of the vehicle.

The first check of course are your fuses. The blower motor fuse should be number 14 in the under dash fuse box. (It is a 10A fuse). Though I say it is fuse 14, I suggest checking all of them simply because my wiring diagrams have been known to occassionally be wrong on the numbering. You also never know what you may find with the others.
I am willing to bet that you will find this fuse to be bad. This is th emost likely cause for the motor to stop running from out of nowhere. But you also have to remember that something causes a fuse to blow, it doesn't happen too often for no reason at all.
So, you may be looking at a blower motor that may be becoming worn and will need to be replaced in the future.
So, first check your fuses, if these check out and you do not have all of the pretty lights on your instrument panel, and pyour power locks work, then I will be more than happy to help you dig in further into the wiring, but I am willing to bet you will find the fuse bad.
As for is this a common problem.... The multiplex control unit does go out a fair number of times, but the fuse is much more common. Generally the blower motors on most vehicles last about 15 years before beginning to ddevelop issues, but as with everything, there are some better than others, and some very poos ones that come across the factory floors.
Cost: If it is the fuse, it will run you about 2.00 for a pack of fuses and this is definately a job you can do yourself. If it is the Multiplex control unit... a bit more costly, and not something I would recommend you doing unless you have an electrical background. It is incorporated with your fuse box, so all of the connecting wires will need to be removed and replaced onto the new one. By the "charge this" book, it only calls for .6 hours of labor cost, but the little box will run around 200 dollars.

I hope I was able to be of a little assistance. If so please remember to rate this answer. If I can do anything further now or in the future, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for the question, and good luck in everything. Take care.
