Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Blower motor noise, chevy lumina, dash switches

Question
Hi, I have a 98 chevy lumina, the car, and it has very poor air flow from the vents. speeds 1,2 and 3 give the same lousy air flow, and speed 4 is really noisy, like either theres a blockage or somethings loose, even though nothing is, plus i get virtually NO airflow. All the dash switches work properly, so I'm really confused. Does my car have a cabin filter, and if so could it be dirty enough to restrict air flow? Or does this sound more like a worn out/rattling blower motor? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Answer
Jake,
It sounds to me as though it has come time to replace your blower motor. I say this simply because of the noise that you describe. The fan should never sound as if something is loose.
As for a cabin air filter, my literature does not mention one, but I and the book have been fooled before. If you do have one, it will be located either in the windshield wiper cowl, or on the blower housing itself. If you had one, and it was completely gunked up... yes it would hinder the airflow, but not to the extent as you describe, nor would it cause noise from the motor housing.
As for cost... for a blower motor... my "charge this" book says that it will require 1.2 hours of labor and the fan itself would cost roughly 192.00. So combined, you should be looking in the neighborhood of just shy of 300.00.
I hope I was able to be of a little assistance. If so please remember to rate this answer. If I can do anything further now or in the future, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for the question, and good luck in everything. Take care.
