Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: a/c compressor, crank pulley, tensioner pulley

Question
I have an '02 f250 7.3 diesel I have had many powersteering problems but have believed to have fixed them.  On my final repairs I noticed my A/C compressor was eating my cerpintine belt.  The clutch on the pulley moves in and out when I push on it(engine not running of corse)... is that normal?  Is it the pulley, bearings in the compressor...  I had replaced the belt 4-5 weeks before I noticed this and believe to have installed it properly.. what do you think?

Answer
Amanda,
First, yes, when you turn on the a/c you should see the clutch move in and out.
As for why it is eating on your belt... that could be many things. How did you narrow it down to the compressor that was chewing it up?
A common cause for this happening is the idler pulley bearing, or the tensioner pulley bearing. When they go out it will sit there and wobble back and forth allowing the belt to rub along whatever gets in it's way.
It sounds as though you are fairly mechanically inclined, so I'll try not to insult your intelligence. The easiest way to check them is to grab and wiggle each pulley (easier if you take the belt off) Also turn them by hand. If the bearings are bad it may be very noticable when you wiggle it, but if they do not wiggle, you may be able to hear a slight grind or squeak when you rotate the pulley.
Another cause may be that when you put it back on, you may have skipped a groove on one of the accesory pulleys or the crank pulley, and as it started up it shredded a bit before it walked itself to center. Or... and this one is less likely, check your alternator/generator, power steering, and compressor mounts. If you forgot to put a shim/spacer in (if it had any) when you put the PS pump back on, or one of the mount bolts have loosened up or came out, it may be allowing enough shake in the routing that is allowing the belt to rub.
With your engine running, watch your belt and see if you can see any wiggle/shimmy in it anywhere. Or check to see if it may be rubbing the timing cover or block anywhere.
Thank you for your question I hope I was of some asistance. If so please remember to rate this answer. If I can do anything further now or in the future do not hesitate to ask. Thanks again and good luck in everything.
