Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Climate control system partially working, lincon town car, climate control system

Question
I have a 1995 Lincon Town Car.  The Climate Control System will hold the desired temperature, but the fan will only operate on high speed.  The auxiliary fan that comes on when selecting Max Air works fine.  The normal blower will only run on high speed if you set it manually.  I suspect the Blower Motor Control Module, but want to see what you think.  Thank you for your help!

Answer
Jack,
Excellent diagnosis.
The Blower motor control module is nothing more than a resistor block. All of your speed voltages travel through it except your high speed. When you set the fan to high, the full 12 volts goes directly to the fan motor. On any other speed, the voltage will travel through one or more of the resistors in this block. If one resitor goes out,... you have nothing but a high speed setting for your fan.
Typically you can get this block from an autozone/advance parts store for anywhere from 35-80 bucks. I haven't ran across too many that I had to go to the dealer for, but if you are the lucky owner of one that you do, expect to add at least 100 bucks to the numbers I mentioned before.
As for replacement... this is something you more than likely can do yourself. The hardest part is locating it. It will be mounted on the blower motor housing, and have a plug with 5 or 6 wires connecting to it. If you cannot get to it underneath the passenger side dashboard, you may want to try removing your glove box. Many times this is a much easier way to access it.
If you take it to a shop and have them diagnose and replace you are looking in the neighborhood of 150-200 dollars.
I hope I was able to provide the assistance you needed. If so please remember to rate this answer. If I can do anything further now or in the future, do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for the question and good luck in everything.
