Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Blown Fuse, amp fuse, cadillac fleetwood

Question
I have a 94 cadillac fleetwood, everytime i turn on the A/C it blows the fuse out. What could be the problem, or what suggestions do you for me to attempt to find the problem?

Answer
Ric,
Which fuse is it that is blowing, the one in the dash or the one in the underhood fuse box?
If it is the 10A fuse in the underhood box, the only thing that this powers is your compressor relay and compressor. My first bet on that fuse is that your clutch coil is shorting out on one of the windings and causing a huge power drain and bowing the fuse.
If it is the fuse in the passenger compartment, the main power hog here is the blower motor. Does it work without the A/C switch on? (heat, vent, etc.) if so that rules this out.
A fuse is blown becasue of too much current being drawn through it. Typically this is caused by a faulty component, but it can also be caused by a problem in the wiring itself. If you have a wire shorting straight to ground, or to another hot wire, this can cause it to blow. Sometimes if the fault is not obvious it takes quite a bit of hitting around before you find the cause.
A check for the compressor... May sound a bit of shadetree mechanic, but it is definitive.
Unplug the compressor wire from the compressor plug. Run a ground wire to the black wire coming from the compressor itself. Run a hot wire with an inline 10 Amp fuse from the battery and touch it to the green wire on the compressor. Did the fuse blow? It is your compressor clutch coil. If it just clicked as it engaged, then your coil is good, and I recommend you take it to a shop to have the remainder of your electrical wiring troubleshot. There is only so much I can do from behind a computer, I hope you understand.

Thank you for the question, I hope I was of some assistance. If I can do anything further during this process, or in the future, please do not hesitate to ask. If you found this response to be of some assistance, please remember to rate this answer. Thanks again and good luck in everything.
