Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: low pressure switch, chevy corsica, 1988 chevy corsica

Question
I have a 1988 chevy corsica 4 cyl. and the compressor is not engaging and there is no power going through the low pressure switch plug but there is power going through the high. I have tested the compressor by hooking it to the battery and it will engage. Can you help?

Answer
Wesley,
I apologize for the slow response, We had an electrical storm and lost power for a period.

You stated there is no power going through the low pressure switch. Is there power getting TO the low pressure switch? According to the wiring diagram that I am looking at for your vehicle, it is impossible for the high pressure switch to allow power to pass through it and not reach TO the low pressure switch. The only reason this would occur is if there was a break in the line somewhere on the black wire/pink stripe connecting the two.
If you are getting power TO the low pressure switch, but not through it, the first check I would make is your refrigerant charge. If this is extremely low, there will not be enough pressure inside the system to close the contacts. If there is refrigerant inside the system and the switch is still not allowing power to flow through, this is an indicator that your low pressure switch is bad. The only way to verify this without an external device to create pressure, is to add refrigerant to the system and do a continuity check between the terminals on the switch itself.

I believe what you will find is that your refrigerant charge is low, though. This is the typical fault especially on any vehicle older than 10 years.

Thank you for your question I hope I was of a little assistance. If so please remember to rate this answer. If you need any more information, or a copy of the wiring diagram sent to you, do not hesitate to ask. As with anything more I can do now or in the future. Thanks again and good luck in everything.
