Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 1992 Ford Compressor, metal shavings, orifice tube

Question
I'm getting ready to change the compressor on a 1992 Ford F150 truck. The compressor destructed and I want to know if I need to change the orifice. If so, can you tell me where the orifice tube is for that particular model truck?

Answer
Arnold,
On a 92 F150, the orifice tube is located at the evaporator inlet line. And absolutely it needs to be replaced.
The reason it needs to be replaced, is that on the inlet of it there is a fine mesh screen. When your compressor burntout, it sent metal shavings all through the lines. These metal shavings will get caught in this mesh screen and cause a restriciton in your line.
You also will need to flush your refrigerant lines and your condensor, for the same reason. Metal shavings.
